Vegetarian Guides to Los Angeles

In the 1960's and early 1970s, Los Angeles set the standard around the world  for vegetarian restaurants. Somewhere along the line,  many of the top vegetarian restaurants in the city of Lost Angels closed, and to our way of thinking, the city has never filled those vacancies. A Los Angeles without The Source (on Sunset Blvd.) is not the same Los Angeles!  And while vegetarians are still catered to at most restaurants, there are no longer any places to go to that meet that 60s' standard that cater exclusively to vegetarians.  That's not to say there are aren't vegan restaurants which offer above average fare (Real Food Daily in Santa Monica comes to mind - try the vegetable paté).

The sixties are decades past, and gone are the days when L.A. had vegetarian restaurants that stood as shining examples of how tasty vegetarian eating can be. In today's Los Angeles, if one wants great tasting food, one needs to give up the notion of dining at exclusively vegetarian establishments, and seek out restaurants that offer both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food (AXE on
Abbot Kinney Blvd in  Venice Beach, for example, or Joe's, which is just down road on the same street, where you can have a four course vegetarian fixed price gourmet dinner for $30.) This crowd's beverage of choice happens to be $35-$150 wines, not carrot juice. Valet parking, but you can wear shorts and your birks (you're at the beach, after all). For breakfast and lunch, two healthy but tasty alternatives are Mani's Bakery, home of the vegan bakery (four locations - we like 2507 Main Street, Santa Monica) and The Rose Cafe & Market on Rose & Main in Venice).
